5 Tips For Cleaning Different Types of Glass

Isaac Haslock • Sep 21, 2021

Whether you have a spot on a window, or a mass of mud and dust on your glass door, you likely want to know how to clean it off properly. While we are here at Get Wet Cleaning Services, make your windows squeaky clean. However, we don’t mind sharing a few tricks to cleaning up your glass yourself as well!

Not all glass is created equal. In fact, there are a whole host of varying types of glass that each need to be treated slightly differently. That’s why, generally, it’s best to hire someone for your commercial window cleaning. Gold coast weather and nature’s natural day-to-day occurrences can be a bit rough on your glass!

With that being said, let’s take a moment to break down each different style of glass you are likely to have, and how you can clean it for yourself if need be.

Annealed Glass

Annealed glass is by far the most common glass type used for commercial and residential properties. It is generally strong, flat, and easy to manipulate. This makes it perfect for windows, glass doors, etc,.

Annealed glass is made through the process of ‘annealing’. This process slowly cools the glass as it is being formed. This releases any internal stress and allows the glass to reach a slightly softer yet firm shape needed for home or property windows.

The easiest way to clean your annealed glass is by using a squeegee, some warm water and a bit of dish soap. You can finish it off with a clean microfibre cloth. You may also use a deionised commercial window cleaning product for that extra streak-free shine.

We use professional grade equipment and techniques to take your annealed glass cleaning to the next level. This includes industrial strength glass cleaning solutions and/or carefully razor blading the windows to remove any fine caked on debris.

Tempered Glass

Tempered glass is often referred to as ‘safety glass’. This is because it is designed to break up into smaller pieces that stick together when broken. This spider webbing pattern helps eliminate sharp edges that can harm someone. You will likely see tempered glass in commercial buildings, as well as on glass tables/furniture.

Tempered glass is made through a process of tempering that is done with either thermal or chemical treatments. It is much softer than annealed glass, and can scratch very easily. This means you should avoid using anything abrasive on the surface of tempered glass.

Generally speaking, cleaning tempered glass is identical to cleaning annealed glass windows. Just be a bit more gentle, think twice before any scrapers are used!

Low-E Glass

Low-E glass is specifically designed to defend against potentially harmful ultraviolet rays coming into your home or property. It does this by utilising a specialised film that is coated over the surface of the glass. It helps disperse ultraviolet and infrared light without reducing the amount of visible light you can have entering the space.

Low-E glass is incredibly expensive. It is generally a massive investment for home or property owners, and should be treated with care. This means avoiding all cleaners that contain ammonia as it can erode the protective film. You should also only use microfibre to prevent any scratching of the protective film. Microfibre plus an ammonia-free cleaner is your best bet!

Heat Strengthened Glass

Heat-strengthened glass is not as common as the glass types mentioned above. This is because it can be prone to coming with some blemishes that occur during the heat-treatment process. However, it is generally stronger than annealed glass without being quite as tough as tempered glass.

Heat-strengthened glass should never be cleaned with a blade, but otherwise can be cleaned exactly the same way you would clean your annealed glass.

If you thought that pouring concrete was a one-and-done procedure, you’re missing out on the major benefits of concrete sealing . Although concrete is made from materials that are strongly bonded together, it’s still quite porous. This means that dirt, grime, oil, acids, mold, and mildew can easily absorb into your concrete surface and cause damage. A deep clean with our sealing services can completely rejuvenate your concrete surface, making it look new in a matter of hours and maintain longevity for years to come. Even if your concrete was sealed after it was poured, it needs to be resealed every now and then to retain its appeal. All in all, sealing can be done with two different methods: water-based and solvent-based sealants.
